1. When Love Replaced Legacy
By the mid-19th century, the Western world quietly rewired the meaning of marriage.
What had been an economic and generational alliance became a private emotional contract. “Love marriage” was sold as liberation, but it also made the household fragile: when emotion waned, the foundation crumbled. Industrial wealth allowed individuals to live without extended kin; the heart replaced the clan as the center of gravity.
Factories, not families, became the new engines of survival.
2. The Industrial Contract
The Industrial Revolution rewarded mobility and consumption over continuity.
Men left farms for factories, women left domestic production for waged labor or dependence on wages, and children became either labor or liability. The multigenerational home shrank into the nuclear family, optimized for efficiency rather than endurance.
This model demanded constant movement—workers chasing wages, families chasing rent. Stability became an accident; love, the only glue left.
3. The Romantic Myth
The poets and novelists of the 1800s sanctified passion. The new creed whispered: “Choose with your heart, not your heritage.”
Yet passion is seasonal; no civilization had ever built its survival on it. What replaced communal wisdom was a commerce of feelings—courtship became theater, divorce the exit clause, loneliness the by-product.
The modern marriage was now a consumer good: advertised as fulfillment, returned when defective.
4. Monogamy as Moral Economy
Industrial states found utility in monogamy. One worker, one spouse, one set of children—an administratively tidy model. Insurance, taxation, and inheritance were simpler when love came in pairs.
What was once an ethical ideal became a bureaucratic convenience. The Church’s theology merged with the factory’s spreadsheet, and the old extended family was legislated out of existence.
5. The Hidden Cost
By reducing marriage to feeling and family to function, the West exchanged durability for autonomy.
The divorce rate rose; birth rates fell. The “freedom” to start over produced generations unanchored from lineage.
The social critic Christopher Lasch warned of this in the 1970s: “The family once buffered individuals from the state and the market. Today it has been absorbed by both.”
