They paid for them.
They own the house.
They paid for the installation.
They may have spent tens of thousands of dollars building what appears to be a small private power plant on their own property.
So the natural assumption is simple:
My house.
My panels.
My electricity.
My system.
But modern ownership is becoming more complicated than that.
Because behind the panels is another layer.
Software.
Cloud servers.
Remote support tools.
Installer permissions.
Automatic updates.
Monitoring portals.
Artificial intelligence.
Continuous data transmission.
And contractual terms defining who is actually allowed to control what.
Read SolarEdge’s software agreement and privacy notice together, and a much larger question begins to emerge:
When you own the machine but someone else controls the digital layer, how much of the machine do you really control?
And perhaps an even deeper question follows:
When the machine continuously reports information about your home, what exactly is being harvested besides sunlight?
The Solar Panel Is No Longer Just a Solar Panel
There was a time when an electrical appliance was mostly self-contained.
You bought it.
You installed it.
It operated.
A technician might occasionally repair it.
But there was generally no distant company continuously connected to it.
Solar systems increasingly belong to a different world.
SolarEdge’s own terms state that SolarEdge, distributors, installers, and other authorized users may have access to products and services, and that authorized users may have the ability to monitor and control the products.
That deserves more attention than most homeowners will probably give it.
Because the inverter hanging on the wall is not merely electrical equipment.
It is a networked computer controlling electrical equipment.
And networked computers create a very different relationship between manufacturer and owner.
The Remote Door Never Completely Closes
SolarEdge says certain diagnostic and maintenance tools remain resident in the system.
Those tools are used for remote support and maintenance.
The terms also state that SolarEdge may use those tools, at its discretion, for remote installation of:
software,
configuration patches,
updates,
upgrades.
Those tools may also transmit information back to SolarEdge regarding product performance.
None of this automatically means anything improper is occurring.
Remote diagnostics can be extremely useful.
A technician can identify a fault without coming to the home.
Software bugs can be corrected.
System performance can potentially be improved.
But convenience always has another side.
The same remote connection that allows someone to repair something remotely also establishes the technological ability to change something remotely.
That is worth understanding.
Ownership Has Split Into Two Parts
There was once a relatively simple definition of ownership:
If you bought something, you controlled it.
The digital economy has slowly separated those two concepts.
Today a person can own the physical device while merely receiving permission to use the software surrounding it.
SolarEdge explicitly grants customers a limited, revocable right to access and use its software services.
Think carefully about what that means.
The homeowner may own:
the panels
the inverter
the wiring
the roof
the electricity
Yet the manufacturer retains ownership and authority over the software platform through which important portions of the system are monitored and managed.
The hardware belongs to you.
The digital environment around the hardware does not necessarily belong to you.

The Contract Can Change While the Panels Stay on Your Roof
Solar panels may remain on a house for decades.
Software agreements do not remain frozen for decades.
SolarEdge reserves the ability to amend its terms, and continued use can constitute acceptance of changes, while material changes may require additional confirmation.
It also reserves discretion to introduce, modify, or delete software features.
This creates a strange new form of ownership.
Imagine buying a refrigerator in 1995.
Twenty years later the refrigerator manufacturer cannot rewrite the rules governing the temperature control.
But software-connected products create exactly this possibility.
The physical equipment can remain unchanged while the rules surrounding its digital operation continue evolving.
The product stays on your property.
The contract surrounding the product keeps moving.
Access to the Digital Service Can Also Be Restricted
SolarEdge’s termination language is broad.
It says it may terminate, suspend, or limit access to the Services, subject to the notice provisions and exceptions described in the agreement.
Precision matters here.
The agreement does not say SolarEdge can arbitrarily shut down every homeowner’s solar panels.
That would go beyond the document.
But it does make one thing clear:
Your access to the digital services surrounding your privately owned energy system exists under contractual permission.
That is not quite the same thing as ownership.
Then the Privacy Notice Changes the Picture Again
The software agreement tells us about control.
The privacy notice tells us about information.
And the second document may be even more revealing.
SolarEdge states that once its wireless gateway is connected to the internet, it begins reporting energy production, consumption, and site information back to SolarEdge and continues reporting for as long as it remains online.
That means the system is not merely something you occasionally open on a phone to see how many kilowatt-hours you produced.
It is a continuous data source.
The System Collects More Than Solar Production
SolarEdge says the information it may process includes:
energy production,
electric bills,
solar installation contracts,
energy consumption,
battery settings,
usage history,
other load consumption,
other information concerning the home’s energy resources.
Then comes another category.
Site information may include:
roof type,
house size,
device configuration,
appliance usage,
system settings,
circuit breaker details,

You potentially have:
a digital representation of the home’s electrical architecture and how that home uses energy.

SolarEdge says that among the categories of personal data it has collected are:
“Inferences drawn from any of the above-mentioned information.”
Then it goes even further.
The privacy notice acknowledges that it may be possible to infer additional information, including sensitive information, from usage information collected through the App and Site.
That is the sentence people should stop and read twice.
The issue is no longer merely:
What information did I give them?
The issue becomes:
What information can be inferred from information I thought was harmless?
That is the privacy question of the AI age.
Raw Data and Derived Knowledge Are Not the Same Thing
Suppose a homeowner never explicitly tells a company:
“I leave home at this time.”
“I charge my vehicle at this hour.”
“This is when my household becomes active.”
“This is when the house becomes quiet.”
Yet enough energy and device information, processed over enough time, may allow systems to identify patterns that the homeowner never consciously disclosed.
That does not mean SolarEdge is secretly building such a profile of every customer.
The documents do not establish that.
But the privacy notice openly acknowledges the broader concept of inference.
That capability is what matters.
Because the most valuable information in the future may not be the data people give companies.
It may be the data companies can derive from it.
Now Add Artificial Intelligence
SolarEdge also states that it uses artificial-intelligence technologies.
The privacy notice says AI systems may operate at different levels of autonomy and may produce:
content, predictions, recommendations, and decision support.
SolarEdge also says use of AI technologies may involve processing personal information.
Now place the pieces next to one another:
continuous energy data
appliance and site information
historical usage
inferences
AI producing predictions and recommendations
and the technological direction becomes easier to see.
Today the system may say:
“Your panels produced 42 kWh.”
Tomorrow an intelligent energy system could potentially say:
“Your household normally consumes this much between 5 PM and 9 PM.”
Then:
“We recommend charging the battery at a different time.”
Then:
“We recommend exporting energy during this window.”
Then perhaps:
“Grid conditions favor reducing consumption now.”
Not every one of those functions is claimed in this privacy notice.
They are examples of where this technological architecture can logically lead.
The important transition is from:
monitoring energy
to
predicting and managing energy.
From Smart Home to Observable Home
This issue extends far beyond SolarEdge.
The modern home is becoming increasingly observable.
Smart thermostat.
Smart television.
Smart speaker.
Smart doorbell.
Smart meter.

Connected appliances.

“We do not sell your information”
does not necessarily mean:
“Your information never moves outside the company.”
Those are two completely different claims.
The Data Can Travel Internationally
SolarEdge says personal information may be stored and processed in countries where it or its service providers operate, particularly the EU and Israel.
Use of its services may involve international transfer of data, including to countries with different privacy protections.
Think about the transformation taking place.
The sunlight falls on your roof.
The electrons stay inside your electrical system.
But the information generated by those electrons may travel around the world.
A home-energy system that appears entirely local physically may be global digitally.

SolarEdge says personal information may be used to comply with court orders and warrants and to assist law-enforcement agencies.
The notice also says information may be disclosed in response to requests from public and governmental authorities, including authorities outside the customer’s country of residence.
That does not mean governments have unrestricted live access to every solar system.
Nothing in the document establishes that.
But it does mean the information generated by a privately owned energy system can enter governmental and legal processes.
That is another way a modern solar system differs from a simple electrical appliance.
What Happens If the Company Changes Hands?
One of the most overlooked clauses concerns business transfers.
SolarEdge says personal information may be transferred during:

Ten years later Company B purchases Company A.

And nothing in these documents proves some secret plan to control private homes.

But the documents do demonstrate something far more important and far more defensible.
The meaning of ownership is changing.
When a privately purchased machine remains permanently connected to someone else’s software ecosystem, ownership becomes divided.
The citizen owns the physical asset.
The corporation controls the platform.
The platform controls access.
The platform receives information.
The platform may analyze information.
The platform may generate inferences.
And contractual terms define the relationship.
The danger is not necessarily what these systems are doing today.
The deeper concern is constructing infrastructure with enormous future capabilities while citizens barely understand the authority embedded inside it.
A free society should not fear technology.
It should understand it.

Whether that network ultimately serves the citizen depends on whether the citizen remains awake enough to understand it.
Because genuine sovereignty does not begin with the solar panel.
It begins with awareness.
